The menace of mosquitoes begins as soon as the monsoon arrives. Whether indoors or outside, these tiny insects can be a real nuisance. Their bites often lead to itching, swelling, and red rashes – and repeated scratching can even cause wounds.

To deal with this, many people turn to mosquito repellent sprays or creams, but the strong smell can sometimes be unpleasant. So, is there a home remedy that can quickly soothe the irritation from mosquito bites?

Yes, next time you eat a banana, don’t throw away the peel just yet because that humble banana skin could be the instant relief you need from mosquito bites.

How Does A Banana Peel Help?

According to Dr Sonali Kohli, Dermatology Consultant at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, banana peels have natural anti-inflammatory properties. The polysaccharides and antioxidants present in them reduce skin irritation and help relieve itching.

Dr Kohli explains that the protein released into the skin by mosquito bites is broken down by the enzymes in banana peels, easing both the itch and the swelling.

How To Use Banana Peels For Mosquito Bites

Direct Rubbing: Gently rub the inside of a banana peel directly on the bite. Itching and swelling should reduce within minutes.

Peel Paste: Mash the peel and mix it with a few drops of rose water or glycerine. Apply this paste to the affected area and leave it for 15–20 minutes before rinsing with plain water.

Other Surprising Uses of Banana Peels

For Whiter Teeth: Banana peels are rich in potassium, magnesium, and manganese, which help gradually reduce yellow stains on teeth. Rub the inside of the peel on your teeth for 2–3 minutes daily and notice the difference in a few weeks.

Treating Dry Skin: The natural oils and antioxidants in banana peels help moisturise the skin. Rubbing it gently on your face can reduce dryness.

Acne Relief: Thanks to their antibacterial properties, banana peels can help reduce inflammation and calm acne-prone skin.

Anti-Ageing Benefits: Antioxidants in banana peels combat free radicals, which contribute to wrinkles and fine lines. With regular use, they may help improve skin elasticity and texture.
