1) Opponent, Benjamin Bonzi, is the world number #51 and had a 2-0 record against Medvedev, both wins in the first round of slams including Wimbledon this year 2) Medvedev was doing sarcastic celebrations the entire first three sets, seemingly mocking Bonzi 3) According to the rules, if a disruption happens between a players first and second serve, they are given their first serve back 4) The photographer that interrupted Bonzi's serve was stripped of his credentials 5) Medvedev referenced Reilly Opelka, an American tennis player, who has accused this umpire of being 'Bush League', 'Amateur hour', and 'the worst umpire on tour'. This is actually one of the few controversies where I would say this particular umpire was in the right 6) Bonzi's rhythm was completely disrupted and he failed to close out the set. He seemed to struggles with some sort of injury in the fourth but regrouped in the fifth and won the match over an hour and a half later 7) After the match Medvedev sat on the bench and repeatedly smashed a racket, then didn't get up to leave until the middle of Bonzi's on court interview 8) after the match Medvedev told the media he didn't do anything wrong and that he thinks Bonzi should get fined too for 'receiving too much coaching' (on court coaching has been legal on tour for several years now) 9) Medvedev has gone 1-4 at slam matches this year, his only win vs a player ranked outside the top 300. His last two slam losses in a row are to Bonzi specifically submitted by /u/Low-Restaurant8484 |
